Diagnostic Adaptive Behavior Scale (DABS) User's Manual

The Diagnostic Adaptive Behavior Scale® (DABS®) User's Manual provides essential preparation for using the DABS.

Adaptive behavior consists of conceptual, social, and practical adaptive skills.

Designed for use with children between the ages of 4 - 21, the norm-referenced DABS interview provides a precise assessment of adaptive behavior for the purpose of determining whether the person meets one of the criteria necessary for a diagnosis of intellectual disability (ID).

The DABS has a number of unique features that support its precision, accuracy, validity, and credibility in making a diagnosis of ID. The DABS:

              • Measures some aspects of adaptive behavior that are not currently measured by other standardized instruments, including naiveté, gullibility, and technology-based skills.
              • Uses item response theory (IRT) to reliably measure individual performance levels across the continuum of adaptive skills and ages.
              • Provides precise information to assist users in determining significant limitations in adaptive behavior.

The User’s Manual includes a sample copy of the interview form. Bundle packs of interview forms are also available in the bookstore.

Because the DABS relies on IRT, it cannot be scored by hand, and requires a specially developed computer program for scoring. A complimentary, single-use voucher code for the scoring platform is included with the purchase of each manual.

This product bundle is one copy of the DABS User's Manual and a pack of 25 DABS interview forms.

The Diagnostic Adaptive Behavior Scale ® (DABS®) is an instrument for assessing the adaptive behavior of people between the ages of 4 and 21 for the purpose of determining whether the person meets the second criterion for a diagnosis of intellectual disability (ID). The second criterion is a significant limitation in adaptive behavior as expressed in conceptual, social, and practical adaptive skills. The DABS is a norm-referenced instrument that uses data obtained from an interview with a respondent who knows the person very well.

The DABS has a number of unique features that support its precision, accuracy, validity, and credibility in making a diagnosis of ID, including:

                • Measures some aspects of adaptive behavior that are not currently measured by other standardized instruments, including naiveté, gullibility, and technology-based skills.

The AAIDD Manual leads the field in understanding, diagnosing, and classifying the construct of intellectual disability (ID). In addition, the 12th edition examines the construct of age of onset in light of the developments of the last 10 years and changes that criterion in a way that will be critically important for professionals in the field. Person-Centered Planning with the SIS-A: A Guide for Planning Teams is designed for use following the administration of the Support Intensity Scale-Adult Version® (SIS-A®) to assist planning team members in using the results to develop person-centered  support plans.

The guide does not require the participation of those involved in administering the SIS-A. The intent is to assist teams in pursuing the type of personalized supports planning that meaningfully enhances a person’s quality of life.

A structured 18-step process that results in a “24-7” support plan for a typical week is outlined. Four of the 18 steps require information from each individual planning team member, and multiple copies of forms for each of those steps are included with the guide.

The SIS-A® Annual Review Protocol is a questionnaire created to help planning teams identify people whose intensity of support needs might have changed in important ways since their last SIS-A assessment.

The protocol focuses on possible significant changes due to important life events and/or health or behavioral concerns, captured in 21 SIS-A items particularly critical to understanding the support need domains  of the SIS-A.

At the conclusion of the protocol, a determination is made as to whether the person’s support needs have or have not changed in important ways, and, if so, the planning team includes a description of the next steps required.

                                    • The Death Penalty and Intellectual Disability

The Death Penalty and Intellectual Disability is the authoritative resource on the application of diagnostic information concerning intellectual disability (ID) in death penalty cases, and will be useful to all professionals involved in ID determination processes within the criminal justice system.

In a landmark Atkins v. Virginia decision in 2002, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that executing someone with ID is a violation of the Eighth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which prohibits cruel and unusual punishment. In its 2014 Hall v. Florida decision, the Court ruled that, while states have the right to establish their own rules for handling Atkins cases, they cannot ignore scientific and medical consensus on the diagnosis of ID, which considers both IQ test scores and measures of adaptive behavior.

The publication addresses the following critical topics:

                                      • The definition of ID, diagnostic criteria, and analyses of Atkins cases
                                      • Assessment considerations
                                      • Intellectual functioning, including IQ testing and the Flynn effect
                                      • Adaptive behavior

Also discussed are related topics including cultural and linguistic considerations,  competence to waive Miranda rights and to stand trial, retrospective diagnosis, malingering, comorbid disorders, educational records, and professional issues.

The Supervisor Training Curriculum teaches supervisors how to direct and motivate staff working with people with IDD. Based on three decades of applied research, each management strategy presented has been tested and proven to work in human services. This Curriculum organizes the role of supervision in human service settings into clear and convenient objectives and responsibilities for new managers.

The curriculum is designed for trainers and upper-level managers in agencies that provide supports to people with IDD. The curriculum consists of a training manual with activity sheets and competency checks for each module and one Trainee Guide for reference and note taking. A file of PowerPoint slides available upon request by contacting books@aaidd.org
