President and Chief Executive Officer ( Matheny Medical and Educational Center)

Company: Matheny Medical and Educational Center
Location: Peapack, NJ

WittKieffer is pleased to collaborate with the Matheny Medical and Educational Center (Matheny) Board of Trustees as they seek an innovative and inspirational President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) due to the upcoming retirement of the current CEO, Dr. Kendell Sprott, who has led Matheny since 2015.

This executive has an opportunity to change the trajectory of many lives and provide the highest level of care, leading a sophisticated medical and educational facility serving children and adults with complex medical conditions and developmental disabilities from across New Jersey and the country. Headquartered in Peapack, New Jersey, Matheny's mission is: to be the recognized model of excellence in the field of developmental disabilities.

Matheny was launched in 1946 as the dream of Walter and Marguerite Matheny. Their son was born with cerebral palsy, and they saw a world that could not respond to children with special needs. Their passion for their son’s welfare and their concern for the many other children led them to launch the Matheny School. In the 1970s, Matheny received approval as a special hospital from the New Jersey State Department of Health. Today, Matheny employs approximately 600 colleagues and has an endowment in excess of $30 million. The main campus is home to 101 children and adults with developmental disabilities, with an additional five group homes that provide a residence for 30 adults. Matheny consists of a special hospital for children and adults with complex developmental disabilities, a special education school providing academics, combined with functional life skills for students ages three to 21, and a comprehensive center caring for the needs of people with disabilities in the community. It also provides training to healthcare professionals, therapists and educators in how to work effectively with persons who have developmental disabilities.

Recently, Children’s Specialized Hospital (CSH)/RWJ Barnabas Health and Matheny entered into a Strategic Collaboration Agreement that will allow CSH and Matheny to share expertise, experience, and resources in an effort to improve access to high quality clinical care and education for those with disabilities throughout New Jersey. Matheny has an opportunity to become the unquestioned leader in serving the medically complex, developmentally disabled population with new and innovative models that address the realities of access, affordability, and outcomes.

The CEO reports to the Matheny Board of Trustees and will develop and implement a strategic vision that centers around quality of care, proximity and accessibility of the workforce, community relations, and enhances the financial stability that is required to meet its mission. The CEO will embrace servant leadership and will have an authentic passion for the mission of Matheny. S/He will serve as the external face of Matheny, as well as its chief advocate, and be capable of telling the Matheny story to raise its visibility and awareness among key influencers, including public and private stakeholders. The successful candidate will be an executive with a record of accomplishments in creating an organizational culture of collaboration, compassion, innovation, and strategic growth. A broad range of healthcare and educational leadership backgrounds and experiences are welcome.
