About the Conference

The 141st AAIDD Annual Meeting will provide researchers, clinicians, practitioners, managers, educators, policymakers, local, state and federal agencies, and advocates with cutting edge research, effective practices, and valuable information on important policy initiatives in complex times. The conference will:

  • Include thought-provoking plenary sessions concerning emerging issues and the complexities that these issues bring to people's lives and the field of intellectual and developmental disabilities.
  • Feature panel presentations, poster presentations, taskforce and special interest group meetings, and multiple networking opportunities for attendees to learn from one another as well as the presenters.
  • Include select pre- and post-conference workshops that address relevant topics of interest in greater detail.

In addition, the conference will identify ways in which professionals can prepare themselves and their organizations to embrace the complexities brought on by ever-changing contexts in research, policy, practices and in people's lives.

AAIDD members have been leaders at the cutting edge of ground-breaking research, practice, and policy in the field of intellectual and developmental disabilities for over a century. AAIDD continues to be the leading interdisciplinary professional organization in intellectual and developmental disabilities. The 141st annual meeting of the association will continue that long-established tradition. Our plenary sessions will focus on emerging and complex issues facing professionals from multiple disciplines whose work is focused on supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to be included in their communities as full participating citizens. The conference will create a forum for sharing expertise in the areas of research, practice, and policy relevant to promoting health, well-being and quality of life for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Promoting Health and Wellbeing

"To be healthy means that you can function, do what you want to do, and become what you want to become"

This sentiment from René Dubois conveys the theme of the 2017 AAIDD conference. Submissions are encouraged that speak to the health and wellbeing of people with disabilities and their families and supports. Relevant topics include physical health, mental health, social well-being, risk and resilience, quality of life, self-esteem, and community participation. Proposals are sought that may contribute to understanding the health and well-being of people with disabilities and opportunities for improvement at the individual, home, system, and community level. We invite submissions that address the service delivery system including addressing the health and well-being of the disability workforce through wellness and resilience programs and systems change efforts toward creating healthy communities.

Proposals are encouraged that present research findings, report on innovative practices, and/or analyze public policies or practices. We strongly encourage authors of proposals to consider the theme of the conference by indicating ways in which their proposal addresses the health and wellbeing of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities or their supports.

Students and Early Career Professionals

The AAIDD Annual Meeting provides a unique opportunity to become involved in the field, develop leadership skills, and network with people who share your professional interests and passion. We encourage students and early career professionals to submit proposals for paper or poster presentations. AAIDD provides scholarships to support the participation of students and early career professionals. To be considered for a scholarship, a student/early career professional must be the first author on a paper or poster proposal and indicate that they would like to be considered for a scholarship on the proposal submission form.
