Intellectual Disability and Criminal Justice: An Overview

People with intellectual disability can be caught up in the criminal justice system as defendants, witnesses, and victims. This overview will focus on people with ID as defendants. Professor Emeritus Jim Ellis, J.D., and Professor Ann Delpha, J.D. will discuss and take questions on the impact of intellectual disability on a defendant at various points in the criminal justice process, from investigation and charging through sentencing, including false confessions, competence to waive Miranda rights, competence to stand trial, assisting counsel at trial and mounting a defense, and competence / mitigation at sentencing.
