Emancipatory Practices with Disability, Community, & Lived Experience

Presenters:
Douglene Jackson, PhD, Gifts Institute
Julieta Hernandez, PhD, MSW, University of Miami
Lydia Ocasio-Stoutenburg, PhD, MS, Penn State University

Researchers, practitioners, and service providers often struggle to find ways to identify and respond to the needs of people with IDD, their families, and especially people of color with IDD. The perspectives and contributions of these individuals are often excluded, even among the most well-intended initiatives. Introducing a novel framework, these scholars share how authentic collaborations with communities can help shift toward an emancipatory goal, amplifying the voices of people with IDD, their families, and their community supporters.
