Using Telehealth to Assist Families of Individuals with Autism in Rural Communities

This presentation will focus on the application of telehealth models of service delivery to address service gaps for families of and providers serving individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder in rural communities. Vanderbilt Medical Center will detail a model and that emphasizes early diagnostic screening and intervention for young children at risk for ASD.

Traditionally, educators and school-based professionals have few opportunities to learn about best practices to support students with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Additionally, expert in-person consultation requires significant cost to local education agencies as experts have to travel long distances, spending short amounts of time designing interventions and informing supports that are often difficult to implement over time. To address this problem, the Wyoming Institute for Disabilities (WIND) adapted the components of Project ECHO™ for use in educational settings, specifically for use with educators who support children with autism.
