Leveraging Innovative Approaches to Engage Underrepresented Populations as Equitable Partners

This presentation will focus on ways to leverage innovative approaches to build, expand, and sustain partnerships among underrepresented populations. Perspectives will be highlighted from a researcher, clinician, caregiver, and individual with intellectual and developmental disability (IDD) to discuss the approaches used to build capacity among people with IDD and other stakeholders. Using a Project Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes (Project ECHO) framework, our project (ASSERT ECHO) developed a model for a learning community that is collaborative and multidirectional (all learners gain knowledge from each other). This work is an expansion on initial engagement that begin in one state (Georgia) and now spans multiple states in the United States. Our stakeholder community includes young adults with IDD, caregivers, clinicians and researchers, thereby allowing these groups real-world practice in strengthening knowledge about research, sharing perspectives, learning from each other, and building trust.
