Content Overview:

Edited by Dr. John R. Lutzker, Dr. Kate Guastaferro, and Megan L. Benka-Coker, Maltreatment of People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities applies the public health approach to the issue of maltreatment of children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities across the lifespan. In this one-hour webinar, authors of three chapters sharing a common theme around reproductive and parenting rights of women with IDD will be featured.

Dr. Laraine Glidden (St. Mary’s College of Maryland) will highlight her chapter entitled “Removing Reproductive, Sexual, and Rearing Rights of Women with Intellectual Disability: Congratulated, Condoned, and Condemned,” which provides an historical and contemporaneous discussion of laws and practices that impose restrictions on the reproductive, sexual and rearing rights of persons with intellectual and development disabilities. Dr. Kate Guastaferro (Pennsylvania State University) will then discuss, “A story of Mothers with IDD: Relationships and Social Networks,” a qualitative study of five mothers with IDD highlighting the informal and formal support networks that may be useful in interventions. Finally, Dr. Sandy Azar (Pennsylvania State University) will discuss her chapter, “A Blueprint for Systemic Change: Enhancing Services for Parents with Intellectual and Other Cognitive Disabilities” which details considerations for prevention efforts targeted towards parents with IDD. The webinar is designed to put these chapters in conversation with one another and inspire thoughtful conversation with the webinar audience. Collectively, the chapters discussed here, and in this volume, are designed to inspire the evolution of research in this area and bridge the gap between research, practice, and influence policy.
