The People to People movement was launched by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956. President Eisenhower believed that direct interaction between ordinary citizens around the world could promote cultural understanding and world peace. People to People Citizen Ambassador Programs organizes and promotes opportunities for bridging cultural and political borders through direct interaction, unparalleled access, and unique experiences.
Since 1996, AAIDD has partnered with People to People Citizen Ambassador Program to provide its members and others with opportunities, through seminars and cultural activities, to interact with other professionals around the world who are concerned with promoting progressive policies, sound research, effective practices, and universal human rights for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
