DESCRIPTION:Date:&nbsp\;September 19\, 2019\nTime:&nbsp\;4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p
.m. EST\n\nHighlighting Efforts to Support Underrepresented Families of Ch
 ildren with Autism through a Community-Engaged Program\n\n\n\n\n\nContent
Overview:\n\nWe know that early identification of autism is crucial\, as i
t enables children to access and participate in evidence-based interventio
ns and services that\, in turn\, have been linked to improved long-term ou
tcomes (Bruder\, 2010\; Irvin et al.\, 2012). African American and Latino
children\, however\, are less likely to be diagnosed with autism than Euro
pean American children (CDC\, 2016) and are more likely to be misdiagnosed
or go unidentified years after the onset of symptoms (Hilton et al.\, 201
0\; Mandell et al.\, 2009).&nbsp\;&nbsp\;\n\nIn an effort to address dispa
rities in access to services and supports for underrepresented families of
children with autism\, Dr. Jamie Pearson developed and piloted the FACES
 (Fostering Advocacy\, Communication\, Empowerment\, and Supports) parent t
raining program. FACES is a face-to-face parent training and advocacy prog
ram that is delivered across 18-24 hours of training and instruction.&nbsp
\;\n\nObjectives: Following this webinar\, participants will be able to:\n
\n1. Describe the disparities in autism diagnoses and access to services t
hat exist among underrepresented families of children with autism.\n2. Ide
ntify ways that practitioners\, special educators\, and healthcare provide
rs can support families of children with autism via community-engaged acti
vities.\n3. Identify strategies that facilitate ongoing communication and
collaboration between parents and providers.\n4. Develop a plan to reach u
nderrepresented families of children with autism in their own communities.
 \n\nPresenters:\n\nDr. Jamie Pearson\, North Carolina State University\n\n
 This is an AAIDD webinar.&nbsp\;\n&nbsp\;\n&nbsp\;
