Mary Sweig Wilson, PhD, received the 2012 Special Award today at the 136th annual meeting of the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AAIDD).
The AAIDD Special Award is given for an unusual or significant contribution or achievement not covered by other award categories.
Dr. Wilson is professor emerita in communication sciences at the University of Vermont. Prior to the enactment of federal law requiring such intervention, she was a leader in Vermont’s efforts to ensure that children with developmental disabilities were integrated into their local schools. Since 1982, she has been president and CEO of Laureate Learning Systems, a company dedicated to producing software to help children and adults with disabilities.. Dr. Wilson has also served as president of AAIDD’s Region X and the Geographic Assembly.
Founded in 1876, AAIDD is the oldest professional society concerned with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
