AAIDD Katrina Hurricane Relief Fund and Disability Information Resources

AAIDD is committed to supporting our community affected by Hurricane Katrina by channeling financial contributions to our AAIDD affiliates and other disability organizations working on direct relief for people with disabilities, their families and our front line workforce.

We will continue to add information to this site as it becomes available and we will continue work collaboratively with our partners in the Alliance for Full Participation as well as other public and private disability entities.

The Disability Relief Fund is now up and running and able to receive tax exempt donations. The Fund is a collaborative effort between the Unitarian Church of Baton Rouge and the Louisana Supported Living Network.

We will be distributing $600 stipends to displaced people with developmental disabilities and dsp's to support their relocation and meet current expenses. The displaced people we know need cash NOW and governmental organizations are not making cash available.

Please make donations payable to the Unitarian Church of Baton Rouge and note the Disability Relief Fund on the Memo section of your check.

CEC has posted an online Hurricane Katrina Action Center to provide a forum for educators to post their professional and/or personal needs to assist the survivors of Hurricane Katrina at

LATAN - The Louisiana Assistive Technology Access Network, in partnership with New Horizons Independent Living Center, Southwest Louisiana Independence Center, Come and Help, United Cerebral Palsy of Louisiana, and other organizations in the state, are operating an Equipment Distribution Program to receive donated equipment and distribute it to the individuals who need the devices.

NASDDDS Summary: - the National Association of State Directors of Developmental Disabilities Services (NASDDDS) sponsored a membership teleconference to discuss emergency relief efforts that have been initiated in the wake of Hurricane Katrina

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has prepared this document along with several others, to help maximize preparation, rescue, and recovery during a disaster. It provides a list of supplies to have on hand and some other helpful tips.
